We’ve been in Deia for a bit over a week now, but I could easily stay here for a month, or all summer. The small town in the northern part of Mallorca is simply breath taking and I must thank my friend Kate for telling me about it. We are renting a perfect little house for our family. It’s 2 bedrooms (with a loft “treehouse” in the kids room), 2 baths, multiple outdoor patios, garage, parking spot, and not only is it smack in the middle of town right off the main road, but it’s also right at the beginning of multiple hiking trails! The house is light and open and nothing fancy, just the way we like it.
We first arrived in Deia after a long morning of travel, car sicknesses, and car rentals, but as we drove along the windy roads from Palma to Deia all the stress of the day quickly dissipated. We dropped off the car and our bags and went to lunch at the first cute looking restaurant we saw. Lunch was delicious but even more important I found my first yoga studio since leaving NYC. I am positive there are plenty of studios in Rome and Madrid and probably even in Sardinia but I just hadn’t looked. We had lunch at the restaurant in Villa Rullen which is a beautiful old building recently restored and opened. There’s an amazing boutique downstairs (too bad we only have two suitcases, no shopping for me, but I want every single thing in this store), a great casual yet sophisticated restaurant, and an organic spa and yoga studio upstairs. what?!? After just a few days here, I felt like I should move into the Villa. I would practice yoga in the am, have lunch with the family in Bistro Rullen, and then treat myself to a spa treatment. ahhh this is the life. No wonder I like Deia so much!
We quickly fell into an easy rhythm in Deia. We made no plans and didn’t have a schedule but most days I would go to yoga in the morning while E hung out with the kids. Some mornings they stayed around the house, other days they would walk around town running small errands like going to the bakery or the post office which is open for just one hour every day. Then Sage would nap, E would work, and Jude and I would hike. We hiked to the beach every day. The beach is rocky and not ideal with a baby as there really is nowhere comfortable to set up camp and there is no shade until after 6 pm, BUT the water is crystal clear and you can see so many types of different fish just swimming around you. It also just has this really chill warm energy. Even while perching ourselves on slippery rocks trying to find a wee bit of shade, we were happy as clams. When not hiking to the beach we explored other paths, including going through a beautiful old cemetery, and olive groves where we found sheep and little baby sheep.
The nature and lack of development is really astonishing here. It is probably my favorite part of Mallorca. Coming from NYC where they are building up every possible square inch, it’s really nice to be on an island that is so green! Funny enough every time we try to take pictures of the beauty they never do it justice. We did not travel a lot away from Deia. One day Jude and I drove to the center of the island to a small town for their farmers’ market. This is one of the oldest markets and they still sell live stock. It was really cool to see baby pigs, cows, chickens, etc. At the same time it seriously made me consider going vegetarian. Another day we drove to visit a friend of a friend for a lovely afternoon of cava, lunch, swimming, and home grown fruits and veggies. We drove to a neighboring town to go to the beach and take the tram. But overall, we just love Deia more than anywhere else we’ve been and driving here takes a long time because of the narrow windy roads, so after a few exertions we decided to stay put in our own little slice of paradise.
Honestly, you should come here and see it for yourself. It is well worth the trip, and super easy to get here anywhere from Europe or from the US with a layover in Barcelona, London, or Paris.
You guys are so beautiful and happy! You’re inspiring! It’s so lovely to see genuine people out in the world, experiencing it fully and breathing in life. It’s shows in how you all just glow. Happy travels! 💕
