When we set out on #legerworldtour I had my work cut out for me. Not the packing and unpacking, not feeding, bathing, and entertaining three kids across the globe, I had more personal work in mind. I really wanted to become more flexible in my attitude and life, and what better way to work on my control issues than to throw myself, and my family, into a situation where we had zero control over almost everything?!
We had a big part of our first six months on the road planned out. Flights booked, lodging lined up, and even some activities and restaurants planned and reserved. See… controlling! As months went on, E and I constantly reminded ourselves to be more flexible. If the weather changed, we could change the day’s activity. If we couldn’t rent a car, we would take the bus and maybe go to a different island in Greece instead of the one we originally intended. We could walk into a restaurant we had been reading about and planning to eat in only to decide that we didn’t like the vibe and go somewhere totally different and casual, or just go eat at home. Now this may sound like completely normal behavior for some people, but not for this girl. I like plans, schedules, and reservations, so these were all milestones for this control freak.
When the organic farm where we booked a month long stay in New Zealand turned out to be a Christian cult (only slightly exaggerating here) it took two weeks, but we changed our plans, booked a great apartment in Wellington and got the hell out of there!
So seven months into our trip, we were all tired, sick of summer (except for E), and ready to settle down for a bit, recoup, and start the next chapter of our lives. This was NOT our original plan! We planned to go to more parts of Asia and then circle back to Europe. But this was the time “the work” paid off. E and I discussed our options and what we truly in our hearts wanted to do vs. what we had planned to do, or what people expected us to do, and the answer was unanimous: we were done! At least for the time being. We booked our flight to LA and the whole family was thrilled to get back to the US of A!
We decided to leave things open from there. We talked about driving up the coast and spending some time in San Fran and maybe going to Colorado for a while, but after a week in cold LA and the forecast not looking better for northern Cali, we booked our flight “home” to Margate, NJ.
And here we are now, reunited with our #misslucy, enjoying the colder temps, the snow, and walks on the beach. We still don’t know where our journey will end, but we are figuring it out from home base.
Nice to see you guys! Hope the trip was as exciting as it looked!
I admire your story and how you picked everything up and just went. How brave and awesome. So healthy for your souls…
